Install MS Office 2007 in Linux

Though there are many alternatives for MS Office, no doubt MS Office 2007 is a winner. If you want to install MS 2007 in Linux follow these steps:

  1. Install Wine
  2. Select Applications>Wine>Configure Wine to bring the Wine Configuration dialog box.
  3. Select Windows Version as Windows Vista from the Applications Tab
  4. Override two dll files rpcrt4.dll and msxml3.dll from Libraries tab. Override them to be Native (Windows)
  5. Download rpcrt4.dll file. Click here and save it on your desktop.
  6. Open the c_drive from Wine menu
  7. Delete rpcrt4.dll and msxml3.dll files from Windows/System32 directory.
  8. Copy the downloaded rpcrt4.dll file into Windows/System32 directory
  9. Download msxml3.msi file from Microsoft download site (here is the direct link for your convenience).
  10. Install msxml3.msi file from the Terminal window by issuing msiexec /i msxml3.msi
  11. Double click on setup.exe file from your MS Office 2007 installation CD. If it doesn’t work just type wine setup.exe from the Terminal window.
  12. Follow the normal installation procedures.

UPDATE: Before you install Office 2007 don’t forget about winetricks. It might help to resolve many issues. Just go to http://www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks, copy the text (codes) in a file winetrick. From the terminal window type sh winetricks. Check all the msxml stuffs and click install.

Be sure that you have installed the latest version of wine (install it with sudo apt-get install wine), selected Windows Vista version to emulate, and replaced rpcrt4.dll file. Try with this another rpcrt4.dll

Wow - thanks for the quick reply!

I should have mentioned, I did use your .dll and my install of wine is 0.9.59~winehq0~ubuntu~7.10 from the winehq repositories. I did have 0.46 on there before so I made sure to apt remove and rm’d /usr/lib/wine.

    Any other thoughts?

I’ve followed this to the letter and it works great. My only annoyances are that the window borders sit over the top of the windows, so you have to use the “office” button to save etc. and the fonts look kinda funky.

    Any ideas on the those?

  6. admin Says:

@ashley - It should work fine with those. Unless we can analyze the output from your konsole, it is pretty hard to say what’s going wrong.

@Yuki - Try installing MS core fonts with:
    sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts

Also, don’t forget to read my another post about managing fonts in Ubuntu.

For the case of borders sitting over the top of windows, I’m also having the same problem and trying to figure it out. If I get any solution, I will post here.

For all those having an issue with the window border covering the buttons; if you are using wine 0.9.60 there is a new feature which you can use to fix this.

Start winecfg, go to the Graphics tab and uncheck the box next to ‘allow the window manager to decorate the windows’. This means that office (and all other windows apps) will have the standard windows borders not the linux borders but it fixes the problem.

If anyone knows of a fix for the bullets and numbering issue I would love to hear it.

I am also having a problem with Word randomly crashing and recovering but it does recover fine.

Hey if your program complains about MSVCR80.DLL, it’s because the thing didn’t properly create the /windows/winsxs/ folder. Upgraded to .61 and it broke. Crashes on startup. Reverted to .59 and it worked again. Also it looks like setting it to XP and making sure gnome manages the window borders makes it more stable.

    Guys,

I got it to install, finally! :-)

All I had to do, in winecfg is to make sure in the Libraries tab, to select the 2 libraries to be overriden as native. I had done the copying, but didn’t configure as native.

Now my question is, WHERE do I go to run office?

I don’t see it in Applications, or in the Wine Programs.

Hey there. Sorry if the below makes this a long post. I have tried numerous times following this guide as well as others. I finally got Office 07 installed, however whenever I start Word/Excel it just keeps saying it has encountered an error. Below is the output in the terminal. I even tried using a different rpcrt4.dll, which seemed to work differently, because I would not get the error message, but the program would not load any further. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks!

Ok. this is the second time this has happened to me. I install office generally flawlessly, except for the fact that msxml3.msi wouldn’t install through terminal so i used winetricks to add it. But, when I finish installation and try to open up a program (e.g. MS Word 2007), nothing happens. And it is listed under “Other” in applications, not under wine. I don’t know if that means problems. But how do I get it to work?

  50. donavan Says:

I started out using another guide at appdb.winehq.org which seems to be very similar to what this guide is, with the one difference the rpcrt4.dll was given here as a download link.

    My setup is thus:
Ubuntu 8.04 running as a guest OS in VMware on a Vista host
    Wine 1.0rc1
Office Pro loading from Office Ultimate DVD ISO
I used winetricks to get all the extra stuff

After telling office to only install word and nothing else, I managed to get word to install almost 60% before the program stuck, then sat there for more than a half hour, doing nothing. I had to kill the process and start over. Now every time I try to install I get a lovely office info box telling me that I suck and to try it again. This time around it starts to copy a few files but thats about it nowhere near the progress I got before. I think that Office sees some of the files or Reg keys and has a fit. I have tried removing the programs from wine, but they wont go away. It looks like I am going to have to reinstall wine and start again.

Install msxml3.msi file from the Terminal window by issuing msiexec /i msxml3.msi

    Hey

I followed your advice and with a bit of luck, I managed to start the installer.

The problem is, it freezes on the install screen with the blue bar that goes across it.

    This happens in Crossover too…

He had the same ‘2/3′ stuck problem. The solution is, wait 20 minutes. It will finish the install, unfortunately the bar dosn’t work probably. Hope you’ll have the luck to install.

  67. Oliver Says:

I let it run for about 2 hours before giving up - there had been no cpu activity the whole time anyway. Then I tried following the instructions on this page:
    http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=4992&iTestingId=27927
(except that I copied that rcp-whatever file from a trial installation of crossover, because I don’t like downloading dll’s from random sites)
I’m in a similar spot now, but I get a few other messages thrown in fairly often, and my cpu usage is at 100% so i’m hopeful. I’ll let you know in the morning.

Word crashes immediately after showering my console with information. There was a reference to “32-bit”, so maybe it’s because i’m in a 64-bit environment?
Excel crashes immediately with a windows “Microsoft Office Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close” dialog wanting to send an error report.
